In 1997, a Sexual Assault Response Team (S.A.R.T.) steering committee was established to pursue instituting a S.A.R.T. program at Central Peninsula General Hospital. The steering committee consisted of members from local law enforcement agencies, District Attorney's office, Women's Resource and Crisis Center, Central Peninsula General Hospital, and Division of Family and Youth Services. The committee obtained a state grant to purchase some examination equipment and CPGH provided additional equipment and examination rooms. S.A.R.T. is a multidisciplinary community-based approach to sexual assault and sexual abuse. The sexual assault response team is made up of police officers, nurses, victim advocates, and prosecutors. Law Enforcement Officers are responsible for the safety of the victim, conducting a criminal investigation, interviewing the victim, identifying the suspect, writing reports, and providing court testimony. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (S.A.N.E.) perform the physical examination, collect and document forensic evidence, and provide court testimony. Advocates offer victim support, crisis intervention, safe shelter, safety checks, individual and group support, and referrals as needed. Prosecutors work with law enforcement to develop cases for trial, provide the victim with information and education regarding grand jury, court hearings, and trial procedures. The Division of Family and Youth Services is notified when children are victims of sexual assault/abuse. DFYS is involved in the investigative process and provides support and follow-up services for the victim and family. The S.A.R.T. program is intended to: ·
