Kenai Bluffs Bank Stabilization Project

Kenai River Bluff Stabilization Project

The Kenai River Bluff Stabilization Project is open to public comment starting June 16 and ending July 21, 2017.  Information on submitting comments can be found below.

The project entails stabilizing approximately 5,000 feet of bluff on the north shore of the Kenai River starting at the creek near the mouth river and ending near Pacific Star Seafoods, just upriver from the senior center.

Project Location

The tentatively selected solution involves placing a berm built with large rocks at the bottom of the bluff.  The berm is designed to prevent flood tides from washing away the material that collects at the bluff toe, and it prevents storm damage to the lower portion of the bluff. After construction, the intent is to let the bluff face erode and recede naturally where the soil transported to the toe of the bluff can accumulate and develop a bluff face slope (i.e., angle of repose) that is relatively stable. A more stable bluff should encourage vegetation to establish to further stabilize the bluff. It has been estimated that it will take up to 15 years to establish a more stable 2H:1V slope. No work will be performed on top of the bluff.

Project Drawing

The next major milestones are an Agency Decision on October 31, 2017 and a signed Directors Report on April 30, 2018.  This could result in design starting in 2019.
